How to start an indie record label in 2026 (with the DistributeMusic.AI Label plan)

September 12, 2026

The 2026 indie-label reality

Starting a boutique record label in 2026 costs under $200 all-in and can be running before the weekend is over. Legacy "you need $10k and a lawyer" advice is dead. Here's the actual playbook.

Step 1 — Pick an imprint name

  • Make sure the exact name is free on Spotify's label search, Bandcamp and Instagram before committing.
  • Buy the .com (or a solid alternative like .fm, .co) — $10-15/yr on Namecheap / Cloudflare.
  • Register the trademark later if the label takes off (not essential in month 1).

Step 2 — Set up distribution with DistributeMusic.AI Label plan

  • Plan: Label — $50/yr flat forever
  • What it unlocks:

- Unlimited artist profiles under one dashboard (no per-artist upsell)

- Your label's custom imprint name appears under every release (not "DistributeMusic.AI")

- Custom © and ℗ lines on every release

- Priority QC (<6h)

- Bulk release CSV upload for backfilling a catalog

- Multi-artist analytics + royalty splits

Step 3 — Contracts (do NOT skip this)

Every artist you sign needs a written agreement. The 2026 indie-label standard is a 1-single / 1-EP deal — you own the master for 3-5 years, artist keeps publishing rights, 50/50 revenue split after distribution + marketing costs.

Free contract templates that hold up in court:

  • Rocket Lawyer or Legal Templates for the base recording agreement
  • Aftermath Music Group's open-source label boilerplate (Google it) — commonly customised by indie labels

At minimum, cover: term length, master ownership, revenue split, exclusivity scope, termination, moral rights.

Step 4 — Onboard your first artists

On DistributeMusic.AI's Label plan you can invite artists via the Admin panel:

  1. Admin → Users → Invite artist
  2. They accept and create releases under your label
  3. All releases carry your imprint's copyright + trademark lines
  4. Royalties split automatically between artist and label based on the split you configure per release
  5. Royalty splits are per-release, so a featured artist can get 20% of one track and 0% of another. Everyone gets a Stripe Express account for payouts.

Step 5 — ISRC prefix (optional but nice)

If your label starts moving serious volume, you can register your own ISRC registrant prefix through your national IFPI office (RIAA in the US, PPL in the UK). This gives you a 3-character code that starts every ISRC you assign (like US-XYZ-26-…).

Until you're doing 50+ releases/year, DistributeMusic.AI's default IFPI prefix works fine and costs $0.

Step 6 — Content ID + UGC monetization

Make sure Content ID is enabled on every release (it's on by default on Label plans). This automatically monetizes:

    • YouTube usage (any video using your track earns you ad revenue)
    • TikTok / Reels / Shorts / Snapchat creator uses
    • Facebook video music library uses

One label we work with (from our own analytics) hit $4,800 in Q1 2026 from UGC uses alone — zero streams needed.

    Step 7 — Marketing on a shoestring

    • Instagram Reels + TikTok: post a 15-second snippet of every release from the label handle. Cross-post on artist handles.
    • Spotify for Artists: pitch every release editorially. Pro users get priority pitch queues.
    • Playlist submission: SubmitHub ($1-5 per pitch), Groover ($1-3), MySphera (free).
    • Weekly release cadence: Spotify's algo rewards labels that ship consistently.

Cost breakdown — real numbers for month 1

    Line item Cost
    DistributeMusic.AI Label plan $50/yr
    Domain (Namecheap) $12/yr
    Logo (Fiverr) $25 one-time
    Instagram + TikTok (free) $0
    First 3 SubmitHub pitches $9
    Total ~$96 all-in

No agent, no distributor rep, no lawyer retainer, no per-release fees.

Label vs Pro plan — which do you need?

    • Pro ($20/yr) — solo artist, one imprint name. You can still use your own project's imprint (e.g. "Ocean Records") on your own releases.
    • Label ($50/yr) — you're signing other artists, want their releases to carry your imprint, and need bulk artist / release management.

If you're releasing under 2+ different artist names and want the marketing benefit of a shared imprint, Label plan pays for itself the first month.

    Ready to launch?

Start your label → — pick the Label plan on checkout ($50/yr flat forever). Multi-artist dashboard, custom imprint on every DSP, bulk CSV upload, priority QC. The whole stack for less than a single lunch a month.
