ISRC codes explained (2026): how to get them, use them and keep your streams when switching distributors

October 26, 2026

ISRC in one line

An ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is a 12-character ID for one specific recording — like USQTA2600001. A UPC is the barcode for the whole release (single, EP or album).

Do I need to buy one?

No. Distributors assign free ISRCs. Labels that want their own registrant prefix can apply through their national ISRC agency and assign codes themselves.

When to reuse an ISRC

  • Switching distributors: re-deliver with the same ISRC (and UPC) so stores link the new delivery to your existing play counts and playlists.
  • Same recording on an album: a single that later appears on an album keeps its ISRC.

When you need a new one

  • A remix, remaster, acoustic or radio edit is a different recording — it gets its own ISRC and should carry a version/subtitle like "Remastered 2026".

How to switch without losing streams

  1. Export your catalog with ISRCs and UPCs from the old distributor.
  2. Create the releases at the new distributor using the same codes, titles and artist names.
  3. Wait until the new delivery is live, then take down the old one.
  4. Entering ISRCs on DistributeMusic.AI

Every track card has its own ISRC field — single or 20-track album. Leave it empty and we assign one for free; paste your own codes if you have a prefix.
