How to start a music distribution company in 2026 (without building the tech)
October 23, 2026
Why start a distributor now?
More people make music than ever — and AI tools have added millions of new creators. Many of them want a local, trusted brand that speaks their language, supports their payment methods and understands AI music. That's an opportunity for labels, studios, communities and creator platforms.
The three ways to do it
- Build it yourself. Store agreements, DDEX delivery, QC tools, royalty processing, payouts and support. Expect a long build and a big team.
- Become a sub-label of an existing distributor. Cheaper, but your artists see someone else's brand.
- White-label. Your brand and prices on the front; a proven platform behind it. This is the fastest route.
- A niche. A country, a genre, a language community or AI creators.
- Pricing. Yearly plans like $20–$50 per artist are common; agencies often charge per release.
- Terms and agreements. A distribution agreement with your artists, a privacy policy and a takedown process.
- Quality control. Stores reject spam, copyright infringement and bad metadata — you need review tools, copyright scanning and AI detection.
- Support. Fast answers in your artists' language build trust.
- Your logo, colours and domain
- Delivery to 150+ stores
- AI and copyright scanning on every upload
- Admin QC panel, CSV status imports and royalty reports
- Multilingual support tools (tickets are summarised and replies translated)
- Days 1–14: setup, brand, pricing, test releases
- Days 15–45: onboard 20–50 founding artists with a launch offer
- Days 46–90: content marketing (guides in your language), partnerships with studios and creator groups
- Accepting every upload — one spam wave can hurt your store relationships
- Ignoring AI disclosure rules
- Slow support
